ACTION ITEM: Public Comment on Proposed Passport Rule Change That Discriminates Against Transgender, Nonbinary and Intersex People

The U.S. State Department has opened a 30-Day public comment period for people to voice their opposition to the proposed federal rule change that discriminates against transgender, nonbinary and intersex people, by requiring all people to list their "sex assigned at birth" on their U.S. passport, based on the federal administration's so-called Executive Order "Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government", which is currently being challenged in court.

The Santa Cruz County Democratic Party passed unanimously at our monthly membership meeting this past Wednesday, 2/26, a motion to submit our public comment to the State Department, strongly opposing the rules change to all 3 of the passport forms in question - the DS-11 (new passport), DS-82 (renewal of passport) and DS-5504 (replacing lost passport).

We hope you will join us in lending your voice and opinion to stand up for our transgender, nonbinary and intersex community members and submit an opposition letter for each of the three passport forms in question. To do so, we have three template letters that you can find linked on our website (add hyperlink to "website" to the place where letters are posted) that you may wish to use as your letter or to help you articulate your views.

Please note - the submission window for this short public comment period closes March 13 for the DS-11 form, and closes March 17 for the DS-82 and DS-5504 forms.

Instructions for submitting your public comment for each of the three forms can be found on the State Department's webpage for the public notice announcement for each form:
